An obedience class for first time owners is always a good idea. You pick a trainer just as you would a doctor. It has to be someone you and the dog are comfortable being around. I have been to a couple and the better ones will meet and discuss with you what you hope to accomplish. They will also use more positive reinforcement as opposed to punishment for training an animal. Go to your local Pet Smart or Pet Supply stores they should have books specific to your breed which will give you better insight to his behaviors and ideas on how to entertain them. Smaller breeds like yours are very good varmint hunters, mice and the like. How ever they will chase and catch large bugs like beetles if encouraged to do so. My personal favorite toy to stimulate the dogs problem solving abilities has to be the ones where you put a treat in a toy and the dog has to figure out how to get the treat out. Most pet sections in grocery and department stores have these.
